Firewalkers step out for charity

Hotsteppers from some of the region’s biggest companies are getting set to haul themselves across the coals for charity. More than 40 people will brave blistering temperatures in a riverside firewalk.

The sponsored event takes place this Sunday (9 December) on Newcastle’s Quayside and is expected to raise more than £25,000 for The Aurora Foundation - a charitable fund that helps community projects across County Durham.

Nicola Cook, the primary fund-holder with the Aurora Foundation, said: “We believe this is the biggest firewalk ever held in Newcastle and will certainly be a spectacular sight. “It’s the first big event the Aurora Foundation has held, so it will be amazing to reach our target of £25,000. The Foundation supports projects across the area, through the County Durham Foundation, particularly those that raise the aspirations of young people.”

The firewalk involves walking across 15ft of red-hot coals on a specially prepared path on the Quayside next to the Pitcher & Piano. The coals are burnt down to embers but are still at around 1000 degrees Centigrade and most people complete the walk in five or six strides. Those who have firewalked before describe the experience as similar to walking on eggshells. Among those taking part are representatives from North East companies including Sage and the Eldon Square Shopping Centre.

The firewalkers will take to the coals at around 5pm on Sunday, to musical entertainment will be provided by Sunshine Panners Steel Band.

Firewalkers will not be allowed to register on the day but can pre-book a place, with a £50 registration fee, by contacting the Aurora Foundation on 0870 766 9872.
