Search is on for Apprentice of the Year 2008

Employers across the North East are being encouraged to enter the Learning and Skills Council’s Apprenticeship Awards 2008. The region did well at the 2007 Awards with two apprentice winners; Abbigail Kewin, from Tyne and Wear, was named Young Apprentice of the Year 2007, and Gareth Moor was crowned Advanced Apprentice of the Year.

Gareth Moor said: “Apprenticeships are excellent. My apprenticeship has given me an academic qualification through a practical route. I now have the skills and a trade I can take anywhere. Winning the award proved all the hard work I had put in for my apprenticeship was worthwhile.”

The Apprenticeship Awards are held annually to celebrate the success of Apprentices who have made a real difference to their future and to the organisation they work for. They also recognise the work of employers who are successfully tackling skills shortages to build their future workforce through Apprenticeships.

Chris Roberts, Regional Director of LSC North East, said: “Apprenticeships are a more attractive option than ever before for those employers wanting to take control of the future of their business by investing in skills. Today, more than 130,000 employers across the country are using Apprenticeships to improve their business performance, whilst giving talented individuals the opportunity to achieve their goals.”

There are awards on offer for both employers and apprentices - for more information, visit apprenticeships.org.uk/awards. The deadline for entries is 29 February 2008. The Apprenticeship Awards will be held on 10 July 2008 at the Royal Horticultural Halls in central London.
