P&G gives £15,000 to aid childhood cancer research

Important research into childhood cancer has been given a boost thanks to a £15,000 donation from Proctor & Gamble (P&G) to medical researchers at Newcastle University.

The money, raised by staff at P&G’s Newcastle Technical Centre, has been awarded to the team at the Northern Institute of Cancer Research (NICR) where the donation will support work to investigate ways of improving the diagnosis and treatment of the most common form of brain cancer in children.

Each year about 350 children in the UK develop brain tumours: treatments are intensive and can have difficult side effects. Understanding more about the tumours should enable doctors to tailor treatments to suit individual children.

Dr Steven Clifford, senior lecturer in molecular oncology at Newcastle University, said: “We are very grateful to P&G for its significant donation and hope that our continued research in this area will make a crucial difference to young patients having treatment for this type of cancer.”

Andrew Graydon, P&G’s Community Matters coordinator, said: “The North East is home to world class research into childhood cancer. The staff at P&G’s Newcastle Technical Centre have worked hard to raise this money and I’m very pleased that our donation will allow additional, important research to be undertaken. We wish Dr Clifford’s team at the NICR every success.”
