Square Peg finds perfect fit

A husband and wife team from Ashington in Northumberland are celebrating after their business was awarded membership of a national trade guild. John and Alison Orgill run Square Peg, a carpentry and furniture making company formed in 2006. They had to undergo a rigorous application process in order to qualify for membership of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. This included gaining detailed customer references and demonstrating professional expertise, skill and integrity.

The award ensures that Square Peg’s customers receive an excellent product backed up by a quality service as the Guild’s stringent entry criteria ensure that only those companies who meet the requirements are awarded membership, which is by no means automatic.

Alison said: “We have worked really hard to build up the business and it has grown to such an extent that we have recently become employers for the first time by taking on an administration assistant and an apprentice joiner.”

Another milestone on top of the Guild of Master Craftsmen is a successful bid to the Wansbeck LEGI Programme. LEGI is a long term Government supported initiative designed to help develop a more enterprising culture. The bid will help Square Peg to move the business forward in marketing and product development - including the launch of a company website early in the New Year.

Angela Steward, Chair of Wansbeck Business Forum, said: “Square Peg is an excellent example of how businesses in Wansbeck are taking the initiative and putting themselves and the region on the map by demonstrating that they are up there with the very best.”

John said: “This has been a fantastic first year in business for us. With our new staff, guild membership and assistance from LEGI we hope to go from strength to strength.”
