College beats national success rates in skills boost

A new development launched to boost the skills base in the North East is already achieving success rates ahead of both regional and national figures. Tyne Metropolitan College’s new Career Development Centre, designed to improve the skills and employment opportunities for the population of North Tyneside, has been in operation for less than three months. Already its work under the Train to Gain banner is achieving 83% success rates, higher than the national figure.

The Centre aims to use the needs of employers to help it equip the unemployed and other post-16 adults for the world of work.

At the launch event Michael Johnson, Partnership Director North Tyneside, Learning & Skills Council, said: “The realignment of Tyne Metropolitan College and development of the Centre is an important move forward for the skills agenda in the North East.”

TyneMet Principal Phil Green said: “It is now widely recognised in business circles that one of the critical factors in generating long term economic growth is forging productive long-term partnerships between the worlds of business and education.

“We have an open door policy for businesses at TyneMet, working closely with organisations of all sizes and from all sectors. The new Career Development Centre is supporting a demand-led approach in post-16 education so that we can be sure we are training people with the skills that will find them employment.”

The Centre has also signed up to the Skills Pledge that guarantees employees access to training in work and also to basic skills qualifications in adult numeracy and literacy.
