Empty offices on Christmas Eve?

Firms are being urged to allow staff to work flexible hours on Christmas Eve because it would be a “complete waste of time” for them to do a full day. Only one in four people will be working on Christmas Eve and many of those will arrive late or leave early, according to the Regus Group.

The last time Christmas Eve fell on a Monday was six years ago and very few people turned out then.

A survey amongst almost 6,000 workers in the UK, US and Germany showed that most people in all three countries would not have to work on Christmas Eve. Most of the businesses planning to open on that day probably closed at lunchtime, said the report.

Jayne O’Brien of Regus said: “Christmas Eve falling on a Monday this year could end up being a complete waste of time, energy and money for businesses and employees. “With around three quarters of workers planning to take the day off, we are calling on bosses to allow those staff who remain to work flexibly rather than commuting to work in an almost empty office.”

The report says closing offices over Christmas would also have a significant environmental impact.
