Seafood firm birngs jobs boost for Seaham

More than a hundred new jobs have recently been created in a County Durham town. More jobs might also be on the way after County Durham Development Company (CDDC) approved a grant to support the establishment of a new seafood plant in Seaham.

Cumbrian Seafoods is investing more than £10m in the Fox Cover Industrial Park facility which will lead to the employment of at least 300 people. The company will use the site to process a variety of fish and shellfish from locations such as Canada, China and Chile.

CDDC, the business development arm of Durham County Council, provided a Strategic Investment Grant to the firm’s parent company, Cumbrian Holdings Ltd, which will be used to help with job creation at the plant. CDDC also provided support for the firm including information on available properties at the time of search and set up links with local support networks to help it establish a presence in the area.

Stewart Watkins, CDDC managing director, said: “County Durham is a great base for businesses to locate their operations and we are delighted that this has been recognised by a company of Cumbrian Seafoods’ pedigree. “CDDC’s role is to support existing businesses to grow and to attract new companies into the area and this grant, coupled with the advice and expertise of our staff, has played a part in bringing Cumbrian Seafoods to the region.”

Peter Vassallo, Managing Director of Cumbrian Seafoods, said: “Support from CDDC and other local agencies has been critical to ensuring that this major development has been successfully delivered.”
