Eco-village unveiled at Wynyard

Plans have been unveiled for a 2,000-home eco village on Teesside. Wynyard Park Ltd said the project would involve fuel efficient buildings, renewable energy systems and sustainable transport solutions.

About 700 acres of land has been earmarked for the new ‘eco-village’ at the site near Billingham. The homes themselves will be built to the latest energy efficient specifications with, renewable and water recycling systems. Networks of footpaths, nature trails and cycle ways will be laid through 300 acres of adjoining woodland for the new community to enjoy.

News of the scheme comes just weeks after Wynyard Park Ltd announced £450m plans to build three million square feet of offices, geared to creating 10,000 jobs over the next 15 to 20 years.

Chief executive Chris Musgrave said: “We intend to build something that is right for the area. If we can make it work, it will bring huge benefits to the Tees Valley region both economically and socially and that will be positive for the whole community. “Ultimately we are looking to create an easy, pleasant and inviting environment to work and live in that is pedestrian friendly and promotes sustainable means of transport.”

Ranald Boydell, Wynyard Park’s sustainable development director, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to create a sustainable development starting from a clean slate. The technology exists to create carbon neutral communities - you just need the will to make them happen.”
