Enthusiast sheds shyness to pursue a personal goal

A computer enthusiast has put his tough school days behind him and is set to become a PC whiz thanks to a new found confidence in training.

After building up the courage to go back into learning, 17 year old Ross McGreevy, from Whickham, is now heading for a qualification in IT - funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East - which will equip him with the tools of the technology trade.

Ross had a difficult time at school having been bullied throughout his secondary years and, as a consequence, found it difficult to interact with groups of people. However, due to a life long passion for computing he was determined to put this behind him and is due to begin an IT NVQ level two with Key Training Ltd, based in Newcastle.

Ross said: “Before beginning my qualification I was really shy and wasn’t sure in which direction my career was going. Since then my confidence has grown enormously, which has not only put me in good stead for the workplace, but has also enabled me to pursue my love of computing.”

Most of Ross’ spare time is now spent building his knowledge of PCs and he will soon look to land an IT role where he can spend his days assisting others with PC problems.

Carol Million, Ross’ assessor at Key Training said: “Ross has shown an interest in IT since I began working with him and his good skills and knowledge in this area were evident.

“Initially, Ross and I discussed his future prospects in detail, when I suggested that he begin an NVQ to help him achieve his aim. I wish him every success in his future IT career.”

Chris Roberts, Regional Director, LSC North East, is quick to congratulate the teenager on his progress. He said: “Ross is a shining example of a bright young man who just needed some extra support to boost his self-confidence and help him make the right career choice. Beginning an NVQ has opened up a number of opportunities for him and I look forward to hearing how he progresses in the future.”
