Top professionals share their skills

Cutting edge professionals from the world of film and music will be sharing their skills with teachers and artistes from across Northumberland in a unique project launching next week.

Northumberland Rising has been devised by Creative Partnerships Northumberland and will give teachers and people working in the creative industries a rare opportunity to work with some internationally renowned names.

The project - which is part funded by the European Social Fund - is the follow-up to the highly successful Anthem For Northumberland which took place last year and this time round the focus is on inspiring teachers and professionals to try new ideas and different ways of working.

The first creative lab of the scheme is planned for January, which will be led by internationally renowned songwriter, composer and producer Nitin Sawhney.

Nitin, who also played an integral part in Anthem by working to produce the original score with young people from schools across Northumberland, will be joined by acclaimed folk musician Sandra Kerr who wrote the music for the 70s children’s TV series Bagpuss.

The participants in the lab come from a wide range of backgrounds including teachers who work with excluded pupils, musicians, dancers and choreographers who will all be embracing the opportunity to work with world class practitioners.

The week will comprise of group and break-out sessions, giving those who are taking part a real opportunity to learn new skills and talents which they can they use to reinforce their work with young people.

Carol Alevroyianni, director of Creative Partnerships Northumberland said: “We think this is a unique offering for those working in Northumberland to really invest in their own creativity, learning from cutting edge professionals and from each other.

“Follow-up bursaries will allow them to put their ideas into action. The benefits to young people’s education from investment in those who work with them are well documented and Creative Partnerships has been at the forefront of this since 2002.”
