Weekly internet update

With Search Engine Optimisation consultant, Pascal Fintoni

Happy New Year and best wishes for your internet marketing activities in 2008.

Here are my predictions for 2008:

  • Major search engines will react to user’s fatigue by revamping their sites and introducing the Universal Search results page we’ve all heard about.
  • The number of video files online will increase dramatically and more political and public figures will use video portals.
  • The battle of the social networks will intensify but users will force the platforms to collaborate more.
  • Mobile phones will continue to offer new features to users and advertisers of course and the offer of free phone calls will become more popular.
  • Online TV channels will appear and disappear throughout the year with a few exciting winners.
  • The average age of the internet user will increase and the majority of searchers will go online for entertainment rather than shopping.

According to a study by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), 4.4 million people in the UK purchased goods online on Christmas Day 2007 spending a total of £84 million, 269% more than in 2006!!

According to a recent Harris Poll, more and more online viewers would use the internet to watch traditional entertainment in particular TV episodes and full-length movies.

Plug of the week: The race to be named the region’s top digital talent is on – with entries rolling in for the very first North East Digital Awards. Do not delay and enter your company on www.northeastdigitalawards.co.uk now!

Story of the week: Netscape web browser will be shut down by AOL after failing to regain market share from Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer according to Bloomberg.com. This will disappoint a lot of Netscape users out there.
