New team aims to unlock enterprise in young people

A new team has been appointed to promote and develop enterprise amongst young people in Wansbeck. Working with schools throughout the district, Wansbeck Education Enterprise Network (WEEN) are striving to raise the aspirations of young people.

A programme of events and activities aims to help young people become confident adults who recognise the importance and value of having a ‘can do’ attitude in the work place.

Forthcoming schemes include ‘Past, Present and Future’ where first school children are encouraged to learn about the history of their local area by taking a tour of Wansbeck on an open top bus.

Throughout the course of the tour the children will be introduced to topics such as coal mining, farming and energy production as well as being told about the future economic developments that will shape the district. The children will then record their feelings about Wansbeck and present them as a poem, letter or newspaper article that will be turned into a book to be published later this year.

Keith Raine, Go Wansbeck programme manager, said: “It is great to have the WEEN team on board. With their energy and enthusiasm, the team are determined to make Wansbeck the most enterprising area in the region.”

Sarah Legge, WEEN programme manager, said: “This is such an exciting time for the team. By embedding enterprise at a grass roots level in all our schools, we are confident that it will become an integral part of young people’s lives in Wansbeck. “We want young people to grow up with the knowledge that in an enterprise culture anything is possible and that being an entrepreneur is a viable, realistic option for their future.”
