Newcastle whiz-kid behind post-Christmas games cheer

As games and DVD retailers post record Christmas trading results this month, North East gamers may not have realised that a local lad at la Newcastle media creation company is the brains behind some of their new games and DVDs.

With film, DVD and games buying at its peak in December and January, Mere Mortals’ post effects artist Davie Miller is one of a team who have been working hard to keep up with demand.

24-year-old Davie’s job is one that a lot of people can only dream about. In an average day he can be doing anything from animating graphics on blockbuster movies to creating art for the latest computer games.

Last year alone, the breadth of his knowledge has meant him working on projects as diverse as Danny Boyle’s blockbuster film “28 Weeks Later” through to promotional material for cosmetics and educational animations for development agency ONE NorthEast. Davie began his career at Mere Mortals after leaving school at 16, cutting his teeth on animated TV titles such as Byker Grove and The Tube. Eight years on, the company is now regularly called upon to work on Hollywood movies or best-selling computer games.

Davie said: “It’s a great feeling getting out of bed in the morning knowing you could be doing anything from airbrushing spots off supermodels’ faces, through to designing characters for computer games people will be buying and playing all over the world. Some days I can’t believe I am being paid to do this.”

“I always thought to be in this type of role I would have to work in London, but my job with Mere Mortals has shown that there are opportunities to work for an industry leading company in Newcastle as well. I love my job and being able to do it in my home city is fantastic.”
