NE tech company set to expand

A Newcastle based company developing technology for use in areas such as waste reduction and railway embankment strengthening has just received a £100,000 investment. Electrokinetic Limited plans to use the money to expand and create new jobs.

Based in the Drummond Building of Newcastle University, Electrokinetic Limited was established four years ago as a geotechnical engineering and knowledge-based company. The business promotes the commercial use of electrokinetic geosynthetics (EKG) in markets such as sludge and waste dewatering, ground strengthening and consolidation, and sports turf.

David Huntley, Chief Executive of Electrokinetic Limited, said: “There is an increasing and now widespread interest in our technology, particularly in the waste and civil engineering sectors. Field trials into the application of the technology are taking place in South Africa, USA and Australia in addition to the UK.

“We will be using this funding to further develop the applications of the technology to complete the development process in our key markets. Thereafter we will introduce our products to these markets as we move into the commercial phase.”

Barrie Hensby, Chief Executive at NEL Fund Managers Ltd, who managed the investment, said: “David and his team at Electrokinetic Limited had a clear vision from the start. As an ambitious company, they just needed to bridge the funding gap to help take the company forward.

“We hope that Electrokinetic Limited will progress and become a worldwide leader in its field by offering these unique solutions to their key market sectors.”
