Boat comes in for port company
A fledgling Middlesbrough-based port company is celebrating after being named Tees Valley’s Best New Business. Global Transport Logistics (GTL) was announced as winner of the Overall Award as well as the Service Award at the Best New Business Awards 2007, which took place on Tuesday at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough.
Gary Smith and wife Clare Saddington-Smith set up the company at Teesport less than two years ago. It is already establishing in-roads into Far Eastern markets in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhao.
Jonathan Lambof Business Link North East, one of the judges, said: “Gary stands as a fine example of the entrepreneurial spirit of the Tees Valley and it’s crucial that the talent of the area is recognised and celebrated. “GTL thoroughly deserve this award and I look forward to learning of its inevitable future success stories in the coming months as it continues to put the Tees Valley on the map.”
Gary said: “These accolades help bolster our confidence in what we are creating here in Tees Valley. We are investing in Teesport as a northern gateway to the UK and believe we will be just one of the many firms that will be able to create significant commercial and employment opportunities if plans to construct a deep sea container terminal go ahead.”
Global Transport Logistics was awarded with a trophy and cheque for £1,000. Winners of each of the eight award categories received £500.
