Pioneering initiative encourages budding scientists
Pupils from a school in Cramlington have had their awareness of chemistry and pharmaceutical manufacture as a career option raised after a recent educational trip to one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. 40 year five children from Cragside Primary School visited Shasun Pharma Solutions Limited as part of the Primary Science Enhancement Programme (PSEP).
PSEP is an industry-based project designed for nine to 11 year olds and is being rolled out across Northumberland to create a greater enthusiasm for pupils to study science and consider taking up a career in the industry in the future.
Graham Adams, Business Development Manager from Northumberland County Council, which is one of the main sponsors of the programme, said: “What we have seen so far is that the pupils in general are extremely excited by the science they see happening. The programme definitely enhances their learning experience and gives them a hugely positive image of industry and possible careers available in a science based industry.”
Colin Dunbar, Operations Manager at Shatsun Pharma Solutions said: “We’re extremely committed to the PSEP - this is the fifth visit we’ve hosted for school children. It’s so rewarding to see the children having a lot of fun, but more importantly learning so much about how science affects the world around them and at the same time providing them with an insight to the world of industry. Hopefully this visit will have inspired some budding scientist to consider a career in the industry and return to Shasun at some point in the future for a career.”
