Recruitment drive launched for economic development vehicle

A search has begun to find a team to drive economic growth and regeneration on Tyneside. Gateshead and Newcastle Councils, in partnership with regional development agency One NorthEast, is searching for a Chair, Chief Executive and private sector board members for the new body whose working title is the NewcastleGateshead City Development Company (CDC).

The NewcastleGateshead CDC will be the first in the country spanning two council areas. It will focus on improving the economic growth and competitive performance of the Newcastle and Gateshead urban area.

Mick Henry, leader of Gateshead Council, said: “We mean business by recruiting a top flight Chair for the CDC - someone from the business community who can spearhead our drive to attract new business, new investment and new jobs. Alongside the new Chair, we are also advertising for a Chief Executive to set up a small, highly skilled team to run the CDC.

John Shipley, Newcastle Council’s leader, said: “By working together we will have the combined economic strength to compete even more effectively in a global marketplace with other major European cities. We need people with the vision, skills and experience to lead the way.”

The CDC will be initiated by the three public sector partners but will be an operationally independent, business-led body that uses private sector expertise to deliver city centre regeneration.

Executive resourcing and development firm Rockpools will be spearheading the search and selection of the Chair, Chief Executive and Board. Applications close on March 25 - a new Chair should be appointed by May with a new Chief Executive and board members the following month.
