Say 'I do' at charity ball

Ladies across the region are being encouraged to ask their partners that special question at this year’s annual ChildLine Emerald Ball. Newcastle-based jewellers Ortak is setting the scene by offering a sparkly gift to the first woman who asks her man to wed on the night.

This year the ball is to be held on February 29 - the leap year date traditionally associated with girls proposing to their man. The first lucky lady to propose will receive an emerald green enamel pendant and necklace set from Ortak’s Talia range. If there has been no proposal before 10am then the prize will go into the grand action.

Carole McEwen, store manager at Ortak, said: “We thought it would be a bit of fun to see if any lady is daring enough to ask her man to get married on this special evening in front of over 350 people. Any lady that can do that surely deserves a prize for doing so.”

Dennis Clark, special events manager for the NSPCC in the North said: “I hope there are lots of prospective couples out there attending the ball, as the evening will provide the perfect romantic setting for a fun proposal. “Between April and September 2007 almost 300,000 children and young people attempted to call ChildLine but due to lack of funding only half of these calls can be answered. “We still need more volunteers who will help us reach our goal of answering every child’s call the first time they ring.”

The ChildLine Emerald Ball, sponsored by SFM Legal Services and North East Property Buyers is taking place on Friday 29 February at the Newcastle Gateshead Hilton starting at 7.00pm. Contact Dennis Clark at dclark@nspcc.org.uk to book tickets or for further information.
