£5m international research facility complete
Building work is complete on a new £5million project to house Newcastle University’s Institute for Ageing and Health on the Newcastle General Hospital site.
The Edwardson Building, commissioned by Newcastle University as part of the Science City initiative, stands on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality on the General Hospital site. The building will house a suite of research laboratories with specialist equipment offices, a seminar room and support areas.
The new building, designed by North east architects Dewjo’c, forms the third phase of development at the Campus and is integral to the University’s investment in the site.
As part of the development of the Campus for Ageing and Vitality on the General Hospital site, Dewjo’c has also been commissioned to prepare for further development of the Campus. As work continues on the reprovision of acute services on the NHS Trust sites at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospitals, plans are being put forward to develop research facilities at the General Hospital site.
Dewjo’c Director, Steve Agar, who oversaw the project, said: “We worked closely with the University’s estate project manager, Dave Pearson, and the research team at Newcastle University to create not only a functional building, but one that will also attract and stimulate top quality research staff in an excellent working environment.”
