Sunderland pushes pride in its past

A new publicity campaign is giving Sunderland residents something more to shout about. “Proud of Sunderland” aims to let residents who are already proud of the city’s past and heritage know more about its future.

The Sunderland Partnership, made up of the city’s main organisations, is promoting some of the less well-known facts about Sunderland to give people more information to fuel their passion for the city.

People can expect to see some of the things that Sunderland has to be proud of promoted in the media, on the streets, in the council’s city guide and in some specially-produced postcards that will be available free across the city. Residents will also be able to join in online on the City Council website.

Canon Stephen Taylor, Sunderland Partnership Chair, said: “The people of Sunderland are very proud of their city, its dramatic past and heritage, its setting by the sea and river and its great attractions. As the city changes rapidly to provide everything people need for life in the 21st century, we want to keep people up to date with what is going on.”

Recently Sudnerland has achieved a spot in the top five greenest cities in the country, was voted the fourth best place to do business in the country and one of the seven most IT intelligent cities in the world.

Sunderland City Council Leader Bob Symonds said: “We are always striving to do more but it’s also good to step back occasionally and celebrate just what we, our residents and our partners across the city are achieving for the next generation of Sunderland people.”

The Proud of Sunderland postcards, the City Guide and other city information is available at various visitor attractions, including Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, the National Glass Centre and Sunderland Empire as well as public buildings across the city and the Tourist Information Office.
