Help needed for the skills revolution

The Chair of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East is determined the region has a strong voice in the wake of new government strategies when it comes to the delivery of high quality education. The LSC has launched a recruitment drive to encourage applications for key positions on nine new Regional Councils, including one for the North East.

Ashley Winter, LSC NE Regional Chair, said: “We need to make sure that the North East’s voice is heard loud and clear in relation to the learning and skills agenda. Regional Councils will provide support and leadership for the LSC’s work, challenging the organisation and in doing so helping to shape a world class education and skills system for each region.

“We are looking for individuals with a strong commitment to learning and skills as Regional Council members will have the opportunity to make a real and positive difference to the lives of thousands of individuals and the success of business in the region.”

The new regional councils have received the backing of a leading business organisation in the North East.

James Ramsbotham, Chief Executive, North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), said: “This is a unique opportunity to have a positive influence over the shape and direction of skills delivery in our region in the future. “The business community is desperately keen to see employees and the future workforce armed with the right skills to help their companies succeed and this is a gilt-edged opportunity to achieve that aim.”

The Councils have been established as part of the Further Education and Training Act 2007, which streamlines the LSC’s “non-executive tier” replacing 47 Local Councils with nine Regional Councils, resulting in a more simplified, less bureaucratic structure as well as being aligned to the organisation of the LSC executive team.
