North East food and drink industry 'must cut carbon footprint'

CO2 emissions and global warming caused by modern food production will come under the spotlight at a conference in the North East next month. ‘Carbon Footprinting for the Food and Drink Industry’ takes place on 6 March in Billingham and brings together a number of academic and industry experts.

The conference is being organised by the Northern Food Industry Innovation Network (NFIIN), an organisation set up to encourage a greater alliance between sector experts in universities and food and drink companies in the North of England.

The Network comprises several organisations, including the Food Processing Faraday Partnership and Leatherhead Food International, and Knowledge House, the North East organisation that encourages collaboration between industry and academics.

Mark Jackson, business development director at Knowledge House, said: “We face major challenges as ‘green’ consumers ask increasingly searching questions and the North East food and drink industry must start now to cut its carbon footprint. “As well as addressing consumer demands, the industry must look at ways of contributing to the Government target of a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions by the year 2050. “Through NFIIN and events like this conference, we can help put the industry in the North of England at the forefront on such issues.”

As well as looking at the key issues, the conference will provide examples of calculations and practical case studies from retailers, manufactures and industry experts to respond to what is a complex and challenging subject.
