Tourism Takes-Off at Launchpad Event

Minister for North East England, Nick Brown MP, officially kick-started the new tourism season for 2008 at an event at Newcastle Racecourse during Tourism Week. ‘Tourism Launchpad 2008’ also saw the unveiling of tourism plans for the upcoming year.

Nick Brown MP, said: “I am delighted to support North East England’s tourism industry and help showcase a sector that is worth £3.5bn to our region’s economy. The growing reputation of North East England as a destination means more visitors than ever are discovering what those of us from the region already know.”

Recent industry highlights have included the announcement of Durham as best city in the UK by readers of Conde Nast Traveller Magazine, the Lonely Planet Blue List naming North East England as a ‘must see’ destination and the new Emirates routes from Newcastle International Airport.

Louise Davis, Head of Tourism and Culture at One NorthEast, said: “The very fact we have Nick Brown MP attending our event is testimony to the crucial part tourism plays in the overall economy of North East England. “There is also a growing understanding and appreciation of the benefits of both business and leisure-related visitor spending.”

Visitors to the event on Friday 14 March found out how current success is to be continued and improved upon during the new tourism year.

Louise said: “The Launchpad event will provide a unique opportunity for everyone within the industry to share news and plans, facilitating businesses to work together. It will encourage a united voice of tourism within the North East and will pave the way for a strong upcoming season.”
