Start ups on the rise in Durham
Record business start up figures have been reported in East Durham over the past year, according to a local enterprise agency. According to the East Durham Business Service (EDBS), 137 new businesses were supported from April 07 to March 08 - a 111% increase on the figures achieved in 2005-2006.
Business ideas have apparently been extremely varied, including traditional businesses from plumbers to accountants and the more unusual from dancewear designers to talent agencies.
The start-up provision in Easington District has been further improved with investment from the ‘Be Enterprising’ programme. 7 business start-up coaches are now active in the area, providing advice and support for budding entrepreneurs and access to grant funding to support start-up costs.
Peter Rippingale, Business Support Team Leader at EDBS, said: “Increasing business starts indicate that the health of the local economy is good and we expect to see this trend continue. Enquiries are up on last year and having a strong network of coaches means that we can respond quickly to clients’ start up needs.”
