Lasers shine at Northumbria

Bright sparks from France and Germany are at Northumbria University this week to share in the University’s knowledge and expertise on lasers.

Students from Mittweida in Germany and Lannion in France are taking part in a week-long course which has been organised by Northumbria’s School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences.

The optoelectronics workshop enables participants to share ideas and talent, thereby enhancing their education and improving their employment prospects. The workshop will focus on the principles of operation and practical applications of lasers in a variety of contexts such as communications and medicine. This international collaborative project, spanning some 12 years, is one of the longest established at Northumbria.

Joe Allen from Northumbria’s School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences, said: “The objective of the project is to develop a small but significant group of European optoelectronics graduates who can enter the European labour market in more than one EU member state or its sphere of influence. In addition, this event fosters good relations between the various partner organisations and promotes European collaboration.”

“This project allows Northumbria students to share experiences and best practice with their peers from France and Germany who have similar interests in various fields of optoelectronics thus ensuring that they have the rights skills and knowledge to take with them to the workplace after graduation.”
