Time for Boro to bite back
Middlesbrough is ‘biting back’ at claims made by a Channel 4 TV programme that labelled the Teesside town ‘the worst place in Britain to live’. Boro Bites Back is a short film competition launched by Northern Film & Media to rebut the verdict handed down by ‘Location, Location, Location’ last year, The competition is aimed at giving the people of Middlesbrough the opportunity to reveal the positive side of living in the town through the use of film.
Employing drama, documentary and animation, North East filmmakers have produced a range of films that are now competing for the public vote on Northern Film & Media’s short film website, www.northeastmovies.co.uk.
Lisa Laws, Northern Film & Media’s Creative Communities Manager, said: “Teesside has proven to be a huge melting pot for ideas, talent and innovation in recent years with skilled animators and filmmakers producing high quality work on a range of subjects, and festivals such as Animex finding a natural home in the area.
“I think the films provide a fresh and unique vision of Middlesbrough, the town and its people, and I hope they work to change any preconceptions that people have about the area.
The 6 films up for the public vote are Establishing Shots, by Mat Fleming and Christo Wallers; The Transporter, by Mark Griffiths; I ♥ Boro, by James Harris; News Flash, by Aodhán óBraoin; Joe, by Louise Hamill; and The Great Edina-Boro Express, by Deborah Bower. Sarah Walmsley, producer on Location, Location, Location, was also part of the panel that selected the final 6 films.
Voting closes at 5pm on Monday 21 April and the winner will be announced on 23 April.
