_space gallery set to help local artists

Architecture and management company _space has launched a gallery area at its new Spaceworks headquarters in South Gosforth, to encourage up and coming local artists such as photographers, painters and jewellery makers to gain exposure from exhibiting and selling their work.

The first artist to take advantage of the gallery is _space architect Phil Lloyd, who is displaying a selection of his work resulting from a recent charity trek in China, with a percentage of any sales going to the ABS.

Phil said: “My interest in photography goes back to my early days studying to be an architect, when you are encouraged to take a camera everywhere with you. “From there I’ve gone on to do more travel photography, including a trip to Africa which resulted in me selling some of my work when I got back, which was great. It’s difficult for small and budding artists to find places to put their work on show as a rule, so the new _space Gallery is sure to be popular once word gets around the artistic community.”

Andy Roberts, managing director of _space architecture, said: “We came up with the gallery idea as one of the ways we can support our staff by creating a working environment that everyone can enjoy. It’s also a great way to give fledgling and established artists a break by offering them somewhere to showcase their work.

“Now that we’ve got the gallery established we are encouraging local artists to come forward and talk to us about putting their work on show.”
