Uni spin-out get a great kick off

A graduate from Northumbria University is celebrating the new financial year after gaining a new contract for his start-up software business. Dimitar Ivanov, who completed a masters in Computer Science after originally graduating in Computing from Northumbria University, recently won a contract to design and develop a desktop and software package for Geordie Sport, a company which aims to provide as much information as possible about sport in the North East.

Dimitar’s company Soficus provides complete custom built software solutions, and he created a website for Geordie Sport using the Soficus content management system.

Jim Pearson, ex Newcastle United footballer and partner of Geordie Sport, said: “Working with Soficus has been an absolute delight. We started our website, geordiesport.com from scratch and without the input from Dimitar, we wouldn’t have got the programme off the ground. “Not only is the work done to an exceptionally high standard, but they are a pleasure to work with and we look forward to having a long and fruitful relationship.”

Dimitar said: “This is a really exciting time for me and I owe a lot of thanks to Northumbria University’s Enterprise Campus for all its support in helping me take this big step forward.

“Enterprise Campus has provided me with fully subsidised office space for nearly a year now which has helped me to attract bigger clients and projects while saving money on renting office space. This has allowed me to invest in equipment and training courses to help our company to compete as well as helping me save money for the office move.”

With its own content management system and E-Commerce systems, in 2007 Soficus achieved Microsoft partner status and Dimitar is looking to accomplish more accreditations and certifications in 2008 to help his company to develop a larger portfolio of projects.
