Second Tyne Tunnel brings local jobs boost
A number of local jobs are expected to be created on Tyneside after a local dry dock secured a contract to deliver the river tunnel sections of the second Tyne crossing.
A&P Ports and Properties Ltd will manufacture four immersed tube concrete tunnel sections at its dry dock at Wallsend from July 2008.
The river tunnel elements are expected to be finished by autumn 2009 when they will be floated along the River Tyne to be lowered into place for the new vehicle tunnel between East Howdon and Jarrow.
A number of local jobs are expected to be created at the dock for the year-long contract.
Nicolas Caille, Publics Project Director at Bouygues Travaux, the contractor appointed to design and build the new vehicle tunnel, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to find a local dry dock that could accommodate this important work.
“The A&P docks offer the space and facilities we need to construct these tunnel units, and we hope that there will be significant local benefits from carrying this work out in Wallsend.”
