North East anti-terrorism ideas sought

An initiative to seek out ideas for protecting the public from terrorist attacks in crowded places is coming to the North East next month.

The ‘Crowded Places’ initiative is the brain child of London-based Secure Futures. The company will be conducting a roadshow around the North East’s universities and companies in June and July. The aim is to encourage people to explore the potential to adapt their concepts, products and services for the national security domain.

As well as rewarding the best ideas with cash and other prizes, the company also hopes to showcase the best ideas to high-profile Government and Industry customers, and to Investors.

Fiona Strens, a Director of the company, said: “There is a tendency ‘down south’ to believe that real innovation only happens there. From what I’ve seen the North East has a unique and interesting approach to innovation and small business support and I’d like to see this more widely accepted and showcased at the national level.”

The ideas competition is run in cooperation with Global Security Challenge. It is open now and can be entered at www.crowded-places.com. The current deadline for entries, which may be extended, is 15 June 2008.
