Last call for tourism award entrants

Time is running out in the search for the best places to eat, stay, visit and enjoy a good day out in the North East. The region’s tourism businesses have until Friday 20 June to enter the 2008 North East Tourism Awards which aim to showcase quality, performance and innovation within the tourism sector.

The judging will take place over the summer and the winners are to be unveiled at an awards evening in the autumn. Judges are said to be looking for excellence in categories such as customer care, staff training and accessibility. The awards are free to enter and help businesses analyse their strengths and weaknesses. All regional winners will go on to represent the North East at the next national ‘Enjoy England Awards for Excellence’.

Previous winners have been rewarded with a significant increase in business due to the publicity generated by their success. Two of the 2007 regional award winners gained further success this year at the Enjoy England Awards. Sunderland International Air show attained gold for the Best Tourism Experience category, and The Mill Granary Cottage in County Durham won gold in the Self Catering Holiday of the Year.

Geoff Hodgson, Chair of the North East England Tourism Board said: “North East England has a range of high quality tourism businesses and the tourism awards are a fantastic way for a business to demonstrate that they are the best of the best. Our region is home to some of the best tourism businesses in the UK and for some of them this will be the opportunity they need to put their business and North East England on the map.”

Anyone interested in entering the North East England Tourism Awards 2008 will find entry forms available online at www.tourismnortheast.co.uk/tourismawards.
