Northumbria students' designs on exhibition in London

A table to write on and a car that converts into a unique camping experience are just two of the designs by Northumbria University students on display at the New Designers exhibition in London next month.

The car, called “Under Canvas”, features a fold-away tent in its roof and has been designed by Sarah Hellewell, final year Transportation Design student. Aimed at the over 40s, the car contains everything required for short trips away. A hot plate folds out from the front grill of the car while a drawer pulls out of the tailgate to reveal a sink and drying rack.

Sarah said: “I wanted to do a project that was fun. I’ve always loved camping and that was my inspiration as I wanted to create a car that you could simply drive off in spontaneously and spend a few nights in away from home.’’

Another student has come up with a solution to the problem of never having paper and pen to hand when on the phone.

Final year 3D student Danielle Quinn has taken the concept of the children’s toy Magna Doodle and embedded it into a classic oak table. The table features a chalkless board and comes with a double ended magnetic pen which was custom made by Danielle so that it matched the design of the oak table.

Danielle said: “Chalkless boards are used in school but, as far as I’m aware, they have never been used in furniture.”

The designs of Danielle and her fellow students will be on display at the final year exhibition held at Northumbria University’s new premises. The free exhibition is open to members of the public from 10am to 4pm until Friday, 27 June at the School of Design, Northumbria University, City Campus East, Newcastle.

Some of the students will then take their designs to the New Designers exhibition in London in July. New Designers showcases the work, energy and talent of some 4,000 graduate designers.
