Support grows for low emission industry

£80m is hoped to be generated under a new scheme aimed at developing low carbon energy technology and fuel cell technology. The project, North East Energy (NEE) 2015, is being funded by Regional Development Agency, One NorthEast.

One NorthEast has donated £432000 to the project, which is being managed by the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI). NEE 2015 will work with public and private organisations to create large-scale demonstration activities. It is hoped that this will encourage people to lower their carbon footprints.

The scheme will focus on industrial and chemical applications, including fuel cells, a technology that creates energy with zero emissions. This will lower the amount of waste produced in industry.

The CPI intends to attract investment from national and international companies with large-scale projects expected to be worth £10m each.

Joanne Glendinning, One NorthEast Process Senior Specialist Advisor, said: “We’re confirming our commitment to low carbon energy technologies and ensuring this region is at the cutting-edge of its development. This will in turn raise our profile nationally and internationally, ensuring continued investment and job creation.”

Dr Graham Hillier, Director of Low Carbon Energy at the CPI, added: “CPI and One NorthEast believe that this region has all the skills, characteristics and sites to act as a major location for the demonstration and deployment of low carbon technologies.”

Industry concerning energy and the environment is considered by One NorthEast to be one of the three most likely to generate profits and economic growth.
