North East students win national enterprise award

A group of students from a school in Hartlepool are celebrating after winning an award at the Young Enterprise national finals in London last week, beating off stiff competition from 12 other schools from around the country.

LanguAges, the brainchild of a team of young entrepreneurs from English Martyrs School & Sixth Form College, in Hartlepool is the first ever company from the region that has won a YE award at national level.

The YE Financial Management in Business Award was presented to LanguAges as the company that had best managed their financial affairs and dealt with any financial problems. The business’s aim is to provide a quality educational resource to help teenagers learn French. The young entrepreneurs created a pack which includes French games, shopping, clothes and class card games along with CD-Roms which they sell to schools and parents.

The group’s teacher Linda Ward said: “We are extremely proud of the students from LanguAges and are delighted to have won an award at national level, which no other school in the region has ever been able to do. It just goes to show that as a school we really nurture our creative and enterprising talent and as a region we have a lot to be proud of.”

Catherine Marchant, chief executive of Young Enterprise North East said: “The standard of entries has been exceptionally high so it just goes to show how outstanding the students from English Martyrs really are, as they have managed to beat off stiff competition from throughout the whole country and have brought this prestigious award back to the region as an all time first.

“We knew that LanguAges would stand out as they put some real thought into the nature of the product, their business, their market and of course their finances.”
