Film project needs North East rock images

The makers of a major new rock film are appealing to North East concertgoers to dig out any images they might have from the 1960s and 1970s.

Geoff Docherty was the region’s biggest music promoter and was responsible for bringing the biggest names in rock to Sunderland and Newcastle.

Geoff arranged for stars like Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie to appear in the region, booking them in their early days for gigs at venues from Sunderland’s Bay Hotel to Newcastle Mayfair. He charted his career in the book The Promoter’s Tale, which is now being turned into a movie by North East film company, Sharp End Productions.

The filmmakers are now looking for anyone who may have taken photographs of these bands, or even people who may have taken cine footage.

“We know that people probably didn’t take cameras in those days very often, even though it would have been much easier than it would have been now,” said Alan Sill of Sharp End Productions. “But we are hoping that there are people out there who went to see gigs at places like the Bay, The Locarno, The Mayfair and Newcastle City Hall who did take pictures of have some film.”

The company is hoping that it will be able to use the information and include it on the film website.
