North East to contribute to new NHS constitution
People in the North East are being asked to comment on a draft constitution which outlines the principles and values of the NHS for the future. The first of its kind in the world, the NHS constitution follows discussions with staff, patients and the public over the last year.
The Government will be obliged by law to renew the NHS constitution every ten years so that any changes are the result of a full and transparent debate.
Commenting on the consultation, Sir Peter Carr, chairman of North East Strategic Health Authority, said: “The founding principles of the NHS have endured for 60 years and remain very important for staff, patients and the public.
“The draft constitution formalises these principles and also sets out in one place the rights and responsibilities of staff and members of the public. The content is based on discussions with thousands of NHS staff and patients across the country, but it is not set in stone. The NHS belongs to everyone and I would therefore urge as many people as possible to participate in the consultation and share their views.”
For patients, the constitution outlines important rights around access to drugs and treatment, information about local health services, quality of care and environment, dignity and respect. For NHS staff, the draft constitution recognises that it is their commitment, professionalism and dedication that really make a difference to quality of care and patients’ experiences.
Members of the public and NHS staff are also invited to send their comments to nhsconstitution@dh.gsi.gov.uk.
