Teaching business success in new classes

High flying employees from across the region have enrolled for lessons in a new course aimed at saving companies money by working smarter.

Around 80 managers and team leaders from firms such as defence and aerospace giant BAE Systems in Newcastle, US manufacturer Caterpillar’s Peterlee and Indian pharmaceutical firm Nicholas Piramal’s Morpeth plant, have signed up for the eight month long course.

Run as part of the North East Productivity Alliance’s (NEPA) best practice programme, the Institute of Leadership Management course aims to teach the latest lean manufacturing techniques.

A pilot programme run by Gosforth-based leadership and management development firm Macnaughton McGregor Ltd has already seen several regional firms save a total of £56,000 by adopting new methods to solve problems and manage change, time and resources.

Fiona Macaskill, Director at Macnaughton McGregor, said: “This course is very much about the managers and leaders being able to manage change in their companies, to help their firms grow and maximise the benefits of the latest lean manufacturing techniques.

“They will gain nationally recognised qualifications which can sustain change in companies. The techniques they will learn will help strip away unnecessary processes, avoid duplication and remove processes which don’t add value to the business.”
