Young winners announced for Rock golf festival

Youngsters from across the region took to the Matfen Hall fairways in Northumberland at the weekend to compete in the Pro Am element of the Northern Rock junior golf festival - teeing off in teams of three each with one of the North’s best professionals.

Dave Henderson, Northern Rock’s Director of Advertising, Brand & Sponsorship, said: “It’s been another great event and the opportunity for some of the children to play in what is a professional tournament with the North’s best professionals is something I’m sure they will never forget.

“The main purpose of today is to give those who haven’t tried golf the opportunity to do so and to encourage those who have onto another level. The silly golf club rules and silly dress codes, which give golf a bad name, are some of my pet hates. Matfen and the Professionals have shown today how it should be done - with a smile and loads of fun, which in turn encourages kids to give the game a try. Lets face it, there are more golf facilities than players and if golf is going to grow, those in charge need to focus more on customer enjoyment.”

Alongside the Pro Am tournament, over 250 youngsters aged 5-16 received free golf lessons with PGA golfers. The Pro Am tournament, which is now in its 7th year, forms part of Northern Rock’s golf festival ‘The Rock’ - culminating with a three-day professional tournament at Matfen Hall for the Northern Rock Trophy.
