Tyneside leading the way in science and medicine
Medical experts from around the world will be visiting Tyneside over the next few months as high-level scientific conferences take place in the North East.
Conferences will take place in Newcastle and Gateshead to discuss research and new findings on topics including magnetic resonance technology and ultrasound.
This week sees the British arm of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine meet at Newcastle University. 120 delegates from as far afield as North America have come together to share new findings and new techniques of investigating the body.
Professor of Medicine and Metabolism, Roy Taylor, director of the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre at Newcastle University, said: “This meeting will act as a catalyst for both research and clinical scanning. The MRI technique provides a magic window into the body. This window not only shows us structure of tissues but also reveals the life processes. “The conference is a golden opportunity to put the destination on the map for this research. It will both help the science and will have an effect on the economy of the North East as we attract increasing numbers of researchers from all around the world.”
November will see the First National Point of Care Ultrasound Congress -200 experts in the field of ultrasound technology - meet at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.
The conferences have been organised by ‘conference ambassadors’ who are promoting North East England as a centre of excellence for medical and scientific research and facilities. Jessica Roberts, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “Our Conference Ambassador Programme is proving extremely successful due mainly to the passion, enthusiasm and expertise of our researchers and academics who have cultivated world-class research centres.
“It is a real testament to their drive and enthusiasm that major conferences and meetings are coming to this destination attracting leading academics and professors from all over the country and world.”
