Accountants jump off buildings

Sorry to get your hopes up - it’s a charity event… A firm of North East accountants have gone slightly further than their job requires by jumping off a building for one of their clients.

Staff at HW Chartered Accountants plucked up the courage to abseil down the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead to raise money for one of their charity clients, Disability North.

Six members of the HW audit team volunteered, along with many other Disability North supporters, to abseil off two balconies from the hotel at the weekend.

After the initial minimum donation was raised, the accountants managed to raise a combined total of £825 and are still vigilantly raising more and more every day to get the most out of the experience and for the charity.

Audit manager Philippa Kingston, one of the volunteers, said: “The prospect of jumping out of a building is always scary and we were nervous, but it’s all in aid of charity and it helped raise more money and awareness for our clients. We have always been proud of our involvement with many local and national charities and, as a company, we are always looking for more charity clients that benefit the community.”

Disability North events officer, Joyce Bradley, said: “The money from the abseil will go towards keeping the centre running, providing vital advice on disability equipment and how to use it. The money will also keep a free phone line open for anyone needing help on information about benefit claims, education, housing and employment. HW’s involvement with us has been invaluable not only to enable us to work so well as an organisation but also helping us raise money too!”

Disability North is a charity that aims to promote inclusion, independence and choice for disabled people. They have a centre for information, guidance and help which needs £800,000 a year to operate.
