North East rules 'seven wonders'
Results from an online poll revealed this week show that six out of the ‘seven wonders of Britain’ are based in England, and two of them are in the North East.
Hadrian’s Wall and the Angel of the North came third and sixth respectively on an online poll by the RAC and Visit Britain.
Loch Ness came top of the list, with 44% of the votes. Another Northern site, Whitby Abbey, came second, and the Houses of Parliament came seventh.
Richard Polley, Head of Visitor Operations from English Heritage at Hadrian’s Wall said: “This is quite a coup for us and it’s great to see that we’re receiving recognition for our sites. More importantly, it’s great to appreciate all the attractions England has to offer - right on our doorstep and all year round.”
The Seven Wonders of Britain are, in order:
- Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle
- Whitby Abbey
- Hadrian’s Wall
- Stonehenge
- Hardknott Pass
- Angel of the North
- The Houses of Parliament
