Nest among the Red Kites

Regional property developer Redkite Construction is putting the finishing touches to a property with a unique view.

The aptly named Red Kite House, Dipton, is attracting attention from environmentalists as it has unobstructed views of the Northern Kites conservation area from a specially designed upper floor viewing area.

Developed in the heart of red kite territory, the previously threatened birds fly within 50 feet of the property in the Derwent Valley.

Red kite lover Steve Hair, owner of Red Kite Construction, had the house designed to take advantage of the magnificent views. He said: “I chose to develop this plot as soon as I saw the view and after doing some research I realised I could combine my passion of the red kites with property development.

“The red kite is a magnificent species which was almost wiped out. The work of the Northern Kites Society to bring the bird back to the region has been outstanding and this is a one off property for appreciating that.”

The Northern Kites Society recently unveiled their breeding figures for 2008 which showed this years output of young red kites has doubled on last years with a record 22 youngsters being reared in the region.

Keith Bowey, Project Manager for the Northern Kites, said: “We are delighted to see a local business using red kites in a promotional sense. It confirms the status of the kite as an environmental icon not just for the Derwent Valley but for the whole region. It is particularly good to see a company trading under a ‘red kite banner’ especially if this helps to raise public awareness of the kites and just how important the green environment is for the North East.”
