Personal data clogs up servers
Small business servers are clogged up with employee personal data and non-business related files, according to IT services company Connect.
The organisation carried out an audit of small businesses’ servers and discovered that in some cases up to 30% was taken up with personal data.
Connect claims many iPhone users are using company servers as personal hard drives to store data which can then be downloaded onto the phones when required.
“Employees are using company servers because of the high-speed internet access and ‘unlimited’ server space on which to store data but in doing so they’re taking up valuable storage space on company systems as well as opening their employer up to a raft of potential legal issues,” said Mark O’Dell, director of new technology at Connect.
“All small firms should include a section on use of the server in their company internet policy guide, and ensure that their IT service provider or online backup provider monitors the servers regularly for any signs of misuse.”
