Newcastle sign company finds its way with new contract
The signs are good for a Newcastle company after landing a £63,000 contract with Middlesbrough College. Newcastle-based Picto will now develop the concept, design and delivery of a new wayfinding sign scheme for the brand new site at Middlehaven.
The signs will direct students, staff and visitors around the college as it opens this month for the new academic year.
The new five-storey college covers 32,000 square metres and includes, among other facilities, more than 70 classrooms, two lecture theatres, six science laboratories, a theatre, recording studios, and engineering workshops.
Picto is an architectural sign company that specialises in providing wayfinding solutions for a range of public and private sector projects. The company was set up seven years ago by managing director Sarah Phillips who, since graduating as a designer, has specialised in the field of signs and wayfinding.
The company now works with clients such as One NorthEast, Niche Hotels, Proctor and Gamble, London Borough of Newham, Land Securities and Darlington Schools.
Sarah said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract as it was an opportunity to be involved with an exciting new landmark development in the region. Picto were up against some big firms for the contract and although it has taken more than six months to complete everything is now in place to ensure that users will be able to navigate the campus with ease.”
Martin Peagam, assistant principal for business development at Middlesbrough College, said: “We tendered the design of our wayfinding and signage package for our new £68 million site to a number of companies. We selected Picto based on the quality of their design, their willingness to offer us solutions and their enthusiasm for the project.”
