Top London 2012 Official pays visit to Tyneside

Leading London 2012 official, Charles Allen CBE visited North Tyneside on Thursday to meet with young people who have been demonstrating their sporting and educational prowess.

Charles, Chairman of the London 2012 Nations and Regions Group (NRG), visited the Percy Hedley Academy for Disability Sports in Killingworth and Marden High School in North Shields.

His day began at the North East England Regional Forum for the London 2012 Olympic Games, at which the region’s NRG representatives and London 2012 Consortia members discussed the North East’s Olympians’ and Paralympians’ successes in Beijing 2008 and the region’s plans to maximise the benefit from London 2012.

After the event Charles travelled to the Percy Hedley Academy, which also features in the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for Paralympic Sports, and was treated to a Paralympic sports display before meeting with children, their parents and trustees along with Paralympian Stephen Miller who recently returned from Beijing with his fifth Paralympic medal.

He then travelled to Marden High School where he met with pupils and teachers from several schools across North Tyneside including Cullercoats School which was recently awarded specialist sports school pilot status.

Charles said: “We can now officially say that the UK is the next host of the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and at London 2012 we are more determined than ever to create a memorable Games that will unite the UK and provide the nation with a world-class showcase.

“We could not deliver this without the support of the whole UK and I am delighted that the North East and its Steering Group for the 2012 Games are proving to be a driving force in providing this.”

Tanya Gray, Nations and Regions Co-ordinator for the North East and One North East Sports Specialist Advisor, said: “More than ever, the North East is in a position to benefit from the London 2012 Games and our aim is to make these benefits available to everyone here in the region.”
