Uni publishing arm earns national acclaim

A book published by Northumbria University Press, Northern Exposures by Chris Steele-Perkins, has been shortlisted for the British Book Design and Production Awards 2008.

The awards promote the British book design and production industry and being on the shortlist shows how far Northumbria Press has come in such a short period of time.

Andy Peden-Smith, Director of Publishing at Northumbria University, said: “This magnificent photography book details country life, warts and all, in the North of England.

“The author is an exceptional Magnum photographer at the height of his powers. Further acclaim for Chris also came this week, when he was awarded the Terence Donovan Award for his work at a Royal Photographic Society event - which recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to the art of science and photography.

“It was an absolute pleasure to work with Chris on what is a fascinating and often moving book that appeals to readers whether interested in photography and the countryside or not.”

Northumbria University Press is listed among publishers such as Beacon Press, Laurence King and Merrel in the Photographic Books category. If successful, the publisher will then vie for the Book of the Year award against all other category winners.

The winner of this and the other categories will be announced at the British Book Design and Production Awards 2008 dinner, to be held on 12 November 2008 at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square.
