Housing gloom is good news for storage company
The slump in the housing market is having a positive impact for a North East storage company. Billingham-based Box Clever has recorded record inquiries from customers looking to de-clutter their homes rather than sell up.
Box Clever is on course to increase profits by 9% this year thanks to a reported 12% increase in turnover. Bosses at the facility say the upturn is largely due to homeowners looking to create more space in their homes.
Fiona Tinman, of Box Clever, said: “Business has been strong throughout the year but there have definitely been more enquiries from people looking to de-clutter.
“When the housing market was booming we used to get a lot of business from people who needed storage because their new homes weren’t being built quick enough. But now it’s the opposite with people preferring to stay put and make more space.”
Rentals for Box Clever’s storage units are up 25% on the same period last year with enquiries increasing by 19%. But it is not just domestic customers using Box Clever, the business community is also turning to storage.
Fiona added: “The majority of our tenants are domestic but we get a lot of tradesmen who need a space to store their equipment and machinery, as well as offices looking to archive old files and records.”
