Stewart & Miliband to meet Next Generation of filmmaking talent

Star of stage and screen Patrick Stewart is to accompany South Shields MP David Miliband as he meets some of the North East’s top film making talent next week.

Known for his roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: the Next Generation and Professor Xavier in the X-Men films, the Huddersfield-born actor will join the Foreign Secretary and 50 guests from the region’s moving image industry at a specially arranged event at Northern Film & Media, 12.30pm on Friday 7 November 2008.

Tom Harvey, chief executive of Northern Film & Media, says: “David Miliband and Patrick Stewart’s visit provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the filmmaking talent we have here in the North East and discuss how we can work together to take these individuals and companies forward in the future.

“We have Emmy Award winners, Venice International Film festival Award winners and companies producing content for national broadcasters from Sky 1 to Community Channel all living and working in this region. It is vital that we work to provide new and emerging talent with the right routes into the national and international market place, propelling them to creative and commercial success. I’m very much looking forward to introducing both David and Patrick to the talent we have in the region.”

Patrick Stewart is in the region to deliver the 2008 South Shields lecture, which is chaired by David Miliband and will take place at Harton Technology College.

David Miliband said: “I am looking forward to welcoming Patrick Stewart to the town. The South Shields Lecture continues to go from strength to strength. The support which has been given to the event by Northern Film and Media will ensure that this years lecture is the best ever.”

Patrick Stewart and David Miliband will also visit the Custom House and Creative Partnerships in South Shields as part of their tour of the region.
