Indian technology giant brings jobs to South Tyneside

Telecommunications software and services giant Tech Mahindra has chosen South Tyneside as the base for its expanding European and North American client base, bringing with it up to 500 new jobs. The new contact centre, sited in Jarrow’s Viking Business Park, will be a major investment for the company. The company is proposing to create a number of jobs in the short term, growing to over 500 in five years.

One of the users of Tech Mahindra’s services will be BT PLC, which has recently signed a £184 million contract on a major regeneration programme in the borough.

Mahesh Nagaraj, Tech Mahindra’s Vice President-Strategic Initiatives, said: “South Tyneside was chosen as the location for the business expansion of Tech Mahindra based on a critical evaluation process and the key parameter that shifted the balance was the support from the council’s executive management team.

“This centre will be a showcase for Tech Mahindra’s services in the UK/European public sector space and will be involved in delivering a number of business critical services. The centre is expected not only to generate direct local employment but also provide a boost to local business.”

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “We knew when BT announced its presence in such a major contract for South Tyneside, it would act as a magnet for further investment. The fact that BT has been able to help attract Tech Mahindra alongside to support their investment demonstrates the confidence, world-wide significance and massive potential that this partnership brings. We are delighted to welcome Tech Mahindra in a move which now brings an injection of confidence to both ends of the South Tyneside Riverside.”
