NHL star chooses Northumbria for study

He has played in one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world, pulling on the world famous jerseys of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers but now former National Hockey League star Chris McAllister has chosen Northumbria University’s Newcastle Business School to further his career.

6’ 7“ McAllister has joined the Mincoff Vipers of the British Elite Ice Hockey League and will be studying at Newcastle Business School as part of his contract.

“I’m now 33 years old and it is time for me to start looking at a career outside ice hockey for when my playing days are over and the opportunity to study at Northumbria University’s Newcastle Business School was a great offer,” said McAllister.

Chris is studying the Newcastle Business School MBA which has been customised around his playing and training schedule for the Vipers.

Last season, fellow defenseman Mark Gouett, originally from Ontario Canada completed the Newcastle Business School MBA and as a result has been rewarded a position as Merchandise and Sales Manager for the club shop.

“I have been able to put into practice what I have learned from my MBA into my new role at the Vipers. The modules studied have really helped me see things differently,” said Mark.

Ceridwyn Bessant, Associate Dean for Postgraduate Programmes at Newcastle Business School, said: “I’m delighted that Chris has decided that personal development will be a key part of his time here in Newcastle and that he has chosen the Newcastle Business School MBA as a way to do this.

“As an organisation we place great value on the relationship between education and sport and we look forward to working with the Vipers on a range of projects together.”
